Volcano Rim Fire-Breathing Dragon coloring page

A friendly dragon resides on the edge of a volcano, breathing a ribbbon of fireabove glowing lava-clean lines, big shapes and fun details just right to be colored by kids.

This coloring page with a soft but not scary dragon is resting at the edge of a large volcano hole. It is a dramatic detail of young children coloring pages. Horns are round, belly plates are soft and back scales are scalloped and drawn with smooth even lines, so the shapes are simple to fill. A curaled ribbon of flame runs out of its mouth in plain wavy segments inviting warm blends free of tiny fiddly areas. Slow rivers of lava ramble between the rock ledges inside the crater; a grouping of a few layered hills and puffy puffs of ash-clouds indicates that distance without clutter. The wings fold to open broad gaps, and smaller detail, such as rows of scales, crannies in the rocks, the twinkling specks of embers, are introduced to good effect. All the work is in a narrow, clean frame so that when the page is done, it should appear neat when printed or framed.

How to color (step-by-step)

Choose one own mood:

Sunrise warmth: tangerine, orange, lemon-yellow flames; warm toned tan rocks; jade/teal dragon.

The twilight hour: deep purples and navy blue sky; gold-orange lava; sea-glass or lilac dragon.

Laying in: Dark color the dragon (body, belly, wings) first. Keep belly plates and inner wings 1 to 2 shades lighter than body.

Form & shadows: The shadow under the chin, along the wing folds and beneath the tail curl is a a tiny bit darker in tone. Leave little white feathers on snout, horns and edge of the scales.

Flame glow: Colouration of flats yellow at the center and mixing to orange and a touch of red at the ends. to imply light very delicately halo the air immediately surrounding the flame with pale yellow.

Lava rivers: Start with yellow path bright, then orangish red in the middle. Put tiny dark lines on fractures and a lighter glare where the lava curves.

Rocks & rim: apply warm grays or browns. Under ledges and close to lava channels darken. Put in a bit of orange into edges of rock toward the fire to shine back.

Sky & ash puffs: Make the sky paler on the horizon, and darker about. Sheer ash clouds lightly dust with cool gray with tops somewhat lighter to give volume.

Embers & glitter: Place some little burning spot in and around the fire and also over the lava. To make finishing sparkles, a white gel pen is nice.

Finish & frame: leave hills a little farther away just a bit bluer or lighter. Use an outer border as a re-tracer once to give it a clean edge ready to put on a poster.
