Knight’s Gentle Dragon Companion coloring page

A nice knight and a nice dragon have a quiet moment at a castle--smooth edges, large forms and cute details make it a great picture to color in by children.

The tender coloring picture is a picture of a tender dragon bending its head toward a small knight in oval armor which is a sign of trust and friendship as opposed to combat. The sword of the knight remains in its sheath and the shield has a simple crest in order to have easy patterns. The small egg shaped horns, the scalloped back scales, and the soft plates of the belly of the dragon are all illustrated with uninterrupted, regular line work so it can easily be coloured by little hands. In the clouds over their back a little castle lifts with its clean blocks of stone, its flags waving in its towers, and a windy turn-way to a drawbridge. A couple of wildflowers, a butterfly and a perch-stone to receive the forepaws of the dragon lend interest without clogging. Wings fold to form huge spaces of color, and areas of smaller emphasis--armor rivets, banner tassels, rows of scales--provide pleasing detail. There is a thin and cosmetic border around the entire scene so that when presenting finished work it appears sharp on the fridge or in a binder.

The Method of coloring (step-by-step)

Select a palette:

Forest day: mossy greens, warm browns, sky blue and an emerald or teal dragon.

Moonlit tranquillity: cool grays and blues armor, castle, a lilac or sea-green dragon.

Royal pageant: expensive reds, gold details and a jade dragon with cream belly plates.

First, base coats: Flat color on dragon (body, belly, wings) and on armor and cloak of knight. Make the belly and the inside of the wings of the dragon a little lighter, of 1 or 2 shades.

Dragon depth Shade at tip of the underside of the neck, at which point the wing joins the body, and behind the tail curled back. Sc lightly with a few darkened scales every three, or so, as texture; reserve minute white marks on snout, claws and horn tips.

Knight armor: To obtain a metallic appearance, paint it in light grey. Now do some darker gray edges and below overlays (elbows, knee plates) then some wispy white highlights, for shine. The crest is a very simple colour--a stripe, a star, a heart.

Observation: The sword in sheath and belt should be painted in a warm leather colour. Make the cloak eye-catching so that the knight would pop on the castle.

Castles and way: Gray soft stone or sandy tan. Shade on the undersides on crenellations and stone lines. Maintain a little bit of warmth in the path so that it stands out of the grass.

ground& sky: Mix the grass in the foreground and closer to the castle a little darker and further away lighter. In the sky, have the lighter tints low down, deeper in the sky; add a cloud shadow on the horizon, if you wish.

Small details: You may have wildflowers, in pale shades; the butterfly may be of your cloak or banner colors. Put some slight halo, where the dragon and the knight are in contact to underline that it is warm.

Finish & frame: Re-trace the outer-border once to get a neat edge. Put some sparkle dots on the armor and the edges of the wings and that will be magical.
