Cherry Blossom Bridge and Graceful Dragon

It is a beautiful coloring sheet with a long-bodied, gentle-looking dragon wrapping itself around an arched wooden bridge that spans an idyllic stream. Scalloped back scales, soft belly plates and rounded horns make the dragon easy to color and friendly, and folded wings (or flat fins) provide broad areas to fill smooth. Large and simple petals of the blossoms that form branches along the sides of the scene and drifting petals across the sky are depicted. Bridge rails accessed by lanterns swing clear and neatly; the water is smooth and ripples and a few round stepping stones balance texture with timeless restrictions. Simple high distance low hills and two clouds that are basic give off the idea of distance and all this falls under a thin and tidy border so to make your end product look neat in a binder or on a door frame. The composition contrasts expanses of sky, water, and dragon body, upon which the designers set pleasing little details (petal centers, lantern tassels, rows of scales), so that there is no moment at which a colorist will have no stimulation to his or her continuing work.

Step by step Coloring

Spring Day: mint or jade dragon, warm wood bridge, sky blue, rosy pink blossoms.

Moonlit Hanami: silver-illuminated or teal-illuminated dragon, dark blue sky, faint moon-illuminated paper lantern, faint mauve tufts of blossoms.

Misty Morning: dragon of sea-glass, foggy blues, soft pastels over flowers.

Base first: Begin with light, smooth color front to back (except the belly plates are a shade or two lighter) on the dragon, bridge, sky and stream.

Dragon depth: Shadow under the jaw, on the belly plates, in curves where the body is curled up and where overlay of the tail. Leave little white stripes on snout and horn tips, and some edges of scales.

Cherry blossoms: Make petals light. Shade softly at bottom in middle and leave tips more light. Center spots with warm yellow or soft brown.

Wooden bridge: Use tan or light brown. Neaten dark lines, make them thin and a little bent to represent wood grain; deepen color under railings and in gaps along planks.

Lanterns glow: color lantern cream or pale yellow; softly halo the close by rail and the petals with a slight form of the same suggesting warm light.

Water & reflections: Do horizontal strokes. Make the middle shade, darker over banks and under the bridge. Put on a touch of grey to indicate reflected flowers here and there.

Stones & banks: Shade bottoms of stones and waterline. Add a cooler gray to the shadow side and a small, highlighter on the top.

Sky & distance: Graduate the sky towards the horizon going light to dark. Leave hills in the distance a bit cool, or a bit lighter to make the dragon stand out.

The final details: Dot some floating petal specks using a white gel pen. Drastically accentuate shadows directly beneath the dragon and bridge and seat them. One re-trace of the outside border to give a gallery-clean edge.
