Start by drawing gray, black or metallic colors over the grill to resemble an actual grill and lend a concrete quality to the piece. With the skewers, have several different colorful ones--brown when grilling meat, green when using peppers, red when using tomatoes, yellow when using corn or squash, and purple when using onions. Mix under the grill bright orange, red, and yellow to help make it look like glowing coals or flames. You can further have fun with patterned skewers or colored plates around the grill but otherwise, keep it simpler. Markers will be used to produce bold and striking tones, but colored pencils can be used to create a shading and smoky effect. It is a simple page that kids will enjoy making but a detailed page filled with textures that adults will enjoy making a fun backyard barbecue.
